As part of my research for this glass project I signed up for a glass blowing workshop at Edinburgh College of Art earlier in the year. It was absolutely riveting stuff and I could feel myself falling in love with this incredibly malleable but vulnerable material. The hot furnaces, the sound of the test glass breaking as it cooled too quickly and the worn wooden ‘hot’ seat where glass blowing and shaping takes place. My brain at times felt as if were melting too, there was a lot to remember and new controlled hand movements to consider in shaping. And of course time was of the element. I left the glass blowing class quite intoxicated with a glass making bug – that  I still have! – and  very excited as I thought about the team of people from Muirhouse that would experience this kind of making. That and I brought home all the glass things I made with much admiration from my family.
